Reasons for your computer running slow and ways to improve its performance

Today, we are living in a very fast world where everyone wants his work to be done very quickly and instant result of every action. Nobody wants to waste even a fraction of a second to be wasted because life has become very fast today and time is very precious as everyone knows that time is money. So imagine a situation that you are working on your computer which is working very slow, it will irritate you and you can’t concentrate on your core job or work.

So today I will discuss with you the reasons for a windows PC running slow and also discuss the ways to make it runs faster.

Before proceeding, we are considering that your computer system has the entire hardware working fine and is also fulfilling the requirement and still your PC is running slow.

Before going to discussing serious issues, I will request you to reboot the machine, because more than half of issues are resolved automatically when we restart the computer system. Sometimes it happens that your computer has not been rebooted recently or may be running for a long time without restarting, so make sure that it should be rebooted before you follow any of the steps below.

  • Malware, adware or a virus issue:

There might be a chance that your PC can be affected with a virus that may lead to reduce the performance of your computer. So your system should have a light weight but effective antivirus software that can protect your system against viruses. Also keep in mind that antivirus should not be so heavy that it affects the performance of PC.

There might also be a chance that your system may be effected with malware or adware, so use a malware to scan your PC, there are also antivirus softwares available in market those include personal firewall, antimalware, antispyware and also other features like internet security.

Also keep in mind that when antivirus runs in background or as per its schedule, it slows down the speed of your PC, so while scanning is going on be patient, let it be completed because this will slow down your PC for a very short time but protect it against threads, viruses, malwares etc.

  • Too many background programs are running:

One of the most common reasons for a computer to be running slow is the programs running in the background. Each time you restart your PC, some of the programs startup automatically. So check those programs, if they are not necessary, disable or stop them. In next step I will show you how you can stop or disable those unnecessary applications or programs from being start automatically when PC starts. These applications often launch during startup and keep running in the background and some of these applications remain hidden behind the up arrow icon at the bottom-right corner of your screen. Click the up arrow icon near the system tray, right-click any application you don’t need to run in background and close them to release the resources from being over used.

  • Unnecessary auto startup programs :

There are so many applications or programs that startup automatically when you start your PC. These programs or applications eat up RAM and other resources that cause slow down your PC. You can disable or stop them to start automatically, if you think that those programs are not necessary. You can start them later manually whenever required. Most of the softwares when you install them, they ask you permission to startup automatically with windows, but we often don’t read instructions during installation and allow them to start automatically. So here is a solution how you can deny them to start automatically with windows. For this, if you are using windows 7 or older version of Microsoft windows, open run command by pressing windows logo key and R key at the same time on your keyboard. Type there msconfig and hit enter. A new popup will be appeared before you, go to startup tab, uncheck the boxes before programs for those you think those are not necessary, but be careful, don’t uncheck any those program that is necessary and important for your PC, such as antivirus or security software or application. Then click on apply, then ok and restart your PC.

If you are using windows 8 or latest version of Microsoft windows, right click on taskbar, and click on start task manager or you can press ctrl+shift+esc to launch task manager. There go to startup tab, then do the same process as mentioned above for windows 7 or older version of windows.

  • You are running too many programs at once:

In today’s digital world, multitasking is a necessity and everyone wants to do multiple things at once. Your computer also allows you to do so but at some point your computer’s memory and processor don’t allow seamless switching from one program to another. So save and close the files and programs those you are not using actively.

  • Too many browser tabs are opened:

As mentioned in previous point that everyone wants to do multiple things at once, similarly on internet we all want to do multitasking and for this we open multiple tabs at once for multiple websites or webpages. This also slows down the speed of a computer, because RAM is getting used in it. So close the unnecessary or inactive tabs that you not using. For future reference you can bookmark them in browser.

  • Not enough free hard drive space:

If your hard drive is almost full, you will find that your computer will run slow because some free space on disk allows the computer to have room for swap file or virtual memory to increase its size and also a space provided to temporary files. So it is necessary to clean or delete unwanted and unnecessary space on disk time to time to provide required space for applications and other utilities like virtual memory and temp files. In next step I will show how you can clean up your disk. So refer to next point.

  • Unwanted or unnecessary files in your PC:

Files like temporary files or junk files slow down the performance of your PC because those files are unnecessarily consuming space in your disk, also eating RAM and processor. So we will learn how to delete these files. First type %temp% in run command and hit enter. A new window will be opened. Select all files and delete them permanently and close the window. Now type prefetch in run command and hit enter, a new window will be opened, select all files and delete them permanently and then close the window. Now open temp folder by typing temp in run command and hit enter. Delete all files permanently in newly opened window, then close it. Now open recycle bin and restore files you need for future. Then select all files and delete them forever. Now we will move to disk cleanup. Open my computer or this computer. Right click on C drive or windows partition. Click on last option, named properties. In the general tab, click on disk cleanup, a new popup will be opened. Select there all options and click on OK.

Here worth mentioning that it will be helpful to you to keep your PC run faster if you keep your profile data very low as much as you can, means to say that keep your desktop, documents, downloads etc empty or very less files or data there. It will be good if you keep your windows partition or most probably C drive free and keep your data in other partitions or drives.

  • Corrupted or fragmented hard drive:

Although I have mentioned in the beginning of this article that we assume that your PC is having fine working hardware but worth mentioning that your hard drive might be corrupted. There are so many reasons of corrupted hard drive such as power fluctuation, abnormal or hard power off your PC, hard disk gets stumbled or kicked etc.

So run check disk command on your PC, open command prompt, type chkdsk and hit enter, if you find errors or bad sectors, you should immediately replace your hard drive.

With the passage of time, when you keep storing and deleting files from your computer, hard drive becomes fragmented. It means, a single file gets stored in separate blocks and in a disorder manner, that results into reduce the read and write speed. To fix this issue, you should do the process of defragmentation. So open my computer or this computer, right click C drive, go to properties, navigate to tools tab and click on defragment now, on a new popup box, select C drive and click on defragment disk. It will take some time but will definitely increase the speed of your computer.

  • Unnecessary or useless programs / softwares on your computer:

This is also a factor that reduces performance of a computer. You should immediately check the softwares or programs installed on your computer and uninstall them. Those programs might include background processes, autostart entries, system services, context menu entries and other things that can slow down your PC. So to remove them, go to control panel, open programs and features (in windows xp option is add or remove programs), and then uninstall those programs that are useless for you.

  • Outdated windows and drivers:

This is also a reason for slow running PC, so make sure you should have the latest version of windows and latest version of drivers in your PC. For outdated windows, you can’t get updates.

  • Not enough memory:

Sometimes it happens that RAM installed in your PC is not sufficient to complete the tasks. So you should check the memory utilization in task manager, under performance tab. If you found that on an average your system is consuming above 80% memory, you should increase RAM in your system.

  • Processor or computer is getting overheated:

Make sure your computer and processor are not overheating. Excessive heat can cause a significant decrease in computer performance because most operating systems automatically reduce the speed of the processor to help compensate for heat-related issues.

  • High room temperature and dirty environment:

The temperature of the room should be cool where your computer is kept, because its gets heated with its processes, so it needs to be cool down, therefore room should be airy and cool. Room should also be clean, because if dust goes inside your PC, it will slow down your PC.

If above mentioned ways not help you, you should reset or reinstall windows on your PC and you should also replace your hard drive (HDD) with solid state drive (SSD).

The solutions mentioned above will definitely help you to make your PC run faster and gives you desirable results.
